Unix timestamps, units and timezones
Unix timestamps represent an instant relative to 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. Convert them when debugging API responses, database records, logs or token claims, and compare local, UTC and ISO 8601 views without changing the underlying instant.

2024-01-01T00:00:00.000ZCommon timestamp mistakes
- Seconds versus milliseconds: Current Unix seconds usually have 10 digits; milliseconds usually have 13. Using the wrong unit can produce a date decades away or outside the supported range.
- Local time versus UTC: A timestamp identifies one instant. Local and UTC displays can show different clock times because they apply different timezone offsets.
- Missing timezone information: A browser date-and-time input is interpreted in your local timezone. Use an ISO 8601 value with Z or an explicit offset when exchanging dates between systems.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a Unix timestamp?
- It is the number of elapsed seconds or milliseconds since the Unix epoch at 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC.
- How does automatic unit detection work?
- DevKitFern treats absolute values of 100 billion or more as milliseconds and smaller values as seconds. Choose the unit explicitly when the source format is known.
- Does converting to local time change the timestamp?
- No. Local, UTC and ISO 8601 outputs are different representations of the same instant.
